India's largest IT companies have reported their Q1 FY27 results, and the numbers arrive against an unusual backdrop. Rapid advances in AI models are reshaping the outlook for the entire sector, and the market is repricing these stocks with every major model release — the question of whether that spending is sustainable is one we examine in is AI a bubble. In this post, we compare TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, Wipro, LTIMindtree, and Tech Mahindra on their latest earnings, look at how each company is trying to protect its business, and see how far every stock now trades below its all-time high.

How AI Is Reshaping Indian IT

As AI models improve rapidly, they are directly affecting the profitability and growth outlook of Indian IT companies. Over the past several months, every new AI model launch has moved IT stock prices sharply once the market digests its capabilities. When the strength of the Claude Opus model became clear, these stocks fell by around 5%. The impact is not limited to India — global IT names such as Accenture and Cognizant reacted immediately as well. On July 14, 2026, IBM stock crashed more than 25% in a single day, largely on concerns tied to the capabilities of the Claude Mythos model and the potential side effects of its misuse.

Since January 2025, a series of AI-related headlines has repeatedly pulled IT stocks lower:

  • January 27, 2025: Nvidia crashed 17% after DeepSeek released R1, a model capable of matching GPT-4-level performance at a fraction of the cost.
  • February 12, 2026: IT stocks fell after Anthropic launched a new AI tool aimed at automating legal contract review and compliance work.
  • June 11, 2026: The IT index dropped more than 4% on reports that Claude Code could modernize legacy COBOL systems at minimal cost.

By late July 2026, most of these major IT companies are down 40% to 53% from their all-time highs.

Q1 FY27 Results Compared

Here is how all six companies stack up for the quarter ended June 30, 2026.

CompanyRevenue (₹ Cr)YoY GrowthNet Profit (₹ Cr)Operating MarginDividend/Share

LTIMindtree11,608+18.0%1,46915.5%₹52

Revenue and net profit are consolidated figures in Indian Rupees; net profit is the amount attributable to shareholders, and growth rates are year-over-year in reported INR terms. TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, and Wipro declared interim dividends alongside these Q1 results; the Tech Mahindra (₹36) and LTIMindtree (₹52) figures are their latest FY26 final dividends.

Q1 FY27 revenue and net profit compared across Indian IT companies

TCS remains in a league of its own on scale, with revenue and net profit larger than the other five combined. For a deeper look at how TCS compares with Accenture and its standalone quarter, see TCS Q1 FY27 Results and Dividend Analysis. Infosys, the second largest, posted Rs 48,211 Cr in revenue with a 21.1% operating margin — second only to TCS in both scale and profitability. The fastest growth came from the smaller players: LTIMindtree (+18.0%) and Tech Mahindra (+17.7%) led on the top line, while Wipro was the laggard at +10.6% in reported terms.

Q1 FY27 operating margin versus revenue growth for Indian IT companies

On profitability, TCS again stands apart, converting its scale into a 24.0% operating margin — well ahead of the pack. Tech Mahindra sits at the bottom on margin (14.4%), though it is growing quickly and expanding profitability from a lower base. For a detailed explanation of how to read profitability ratios, see Fundamental Analysis Part 3: Profitability Ratios.

Revenue Mix by Business Vertical

The companies also differ in where their revenue comes from. Banking and financial services (BFSI) remains the single largest vertical for most of them, but the concentration varies widely.

Q1 FY27 revenue mix by business vertical across Indian IT companies

Vertical groupings are harmonized across companies for comparison; each firm reports its segments under slightly different names.

TCS and LTIMindtree lean most heavily on financial-services clients, while Tech Mahindra stands out for its large exposure to communications, technology, and media — a legacy of its telecom roots.

How Far Each Stock Is From Its All-Time High

For all the strength in the underlying earnings, the stocks tell a very different story. The table below uses the current price and the record high from each company's long-term weekly chart.

TCS₹2,243₹4,592~51%
Infosys₹1,047₹2,006~48%

LTIMindtree₹3,965₹7,458~47%
Tech Mahindra₹1,556₹1,854~16%

How far each Indian IT stock trades below its all-time high

Wipro and TCS have fallen the hardest, both down over 50% from their peaks. Tech Mahindra has held up best, down only around 16% — a notable divergence given it also posted one of the strongest growth rates for the quarter.

How These Companies Are Defending Themselves

With AI pressuring the traditional services model, each company is making its own moves to stay relevant.

TCS secured a $1 billion investment from TPG on November 20, 2025, to accelerate its AI data center business, HyperVault, and deliver secure, reliable, large-scale AI-ready infrastructure for hyperscalers and AI-driven organizations. On February 19, 2026, it announced a partnership with OpenAI for enterprise AI and AI infrastructure development. On the software side, however, there is still little sign of original AI innovation or fundamental AI research. A look through the TCS research page shows platforms and products built using AI, but no fundamental AI research of its own.

Infosys announced a collaboration with OpenAI on April 22, 2026, to speed up enterprise AI transformation. AI already represents 8.2% of Infosys's Q1 FY27 revenue — the highest disclosed AI revenue share among these six companies. The company guided FY27 constant-currency revenue growth at 1.5%–3.0% with an operating margin of 20%–22%.

HCL Tech is the lead investor in Servam AI and plans to invest $363 million to set up AI data centers in India.

LTIMindtree has partnered with Anthropic to embed Claude models for its enterprise clients.

Wipro has integrated Nvidia AI Enterprise into its Wipro Intelligence suite.

Tech Mahindra has partnered with Nvidia for its Orion platform.

Beyond these moves, all of these companies are also upskilling their workforce in AI and generative-AI skills to serve customers better. Even so, fundamental research in advanced software or hardware is still largely missing across the group.

Future Prospects and Key Challenges

To gauge the future, one has to watch closely how quickly these companies expand in the AI field, whether they choose infrastructure or services, and whether they can sustain their margins while growing revenue.

Their main advantage is a strong balance sheet: almost no debt and large cash surpluses. They should keep investing those profits in emerging areas to stay relevant in a fast-changing environment.

The major challenge they face — and will keep facing — is winning larger deals and growing their market capitalization as AI adoption spreads. Used effectively, AI can cut the effort on a routine software-development task by at least 50%, which pushes these companies toward smaller workforces and layoffs. In that world, the old logic of winning large deals by pointing to a large headcount no longer holds.

In short, if these companies remain only adopters of AI rather than innovators, their valuations will keep suffering from the lack of new innovation or a clear strategy to win high-value clients. For a structured approach to evaluating any stock, see How to Pick a Stock: Five-Step Framework.
