Why IBM Crashed 25%: The Claude Mythos Factor
IBM crashed 25% in its worst day ever after Q2 2026 earnings missed. How Claude Mythos and Project Glasswing disrupted deals and triggered the sell-off.
International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) released disappointing preliminary Q2 2026 results on July 14, 2026. CEO Arvind Krishna admitted the company "faltered" and failed to close large deals on time. Five key factors drove the miss: z17 mainframe underperformance, stalled deal closures, client capex shifts, industry-wide cybersecurity distractions linked to Anthropic's Claude Mythos, and gross margin erosion.
The weekly chart of IBM is shown below.

Five Major Reasons Behind the Shortfall
1. z17 Mainframe Underperformance
Despite the z17 being 130% program-to-program versus z16 (the strongest mainframe cycle in IBM's history), Infrastructure revenue fell 7% — far worse than the low-single-digit decline IBM had guided.
2. Failed to Close Large Deals
Krishna openly admitted the team "faltered" and did not adapt quickly enough. Numerous large deals slipped past quarter-end, driving the majority of the shortfall.
3. Client Capex Reprioritization
In late June, clients diverted their quarterly capital expenditures toward servers, memory, and storage — rushing to secure supply-constrained infrastructure ahead of expected price increases. IBM anticipated some of this, but not the magnitude.
4. Cybersecurity Distractions
Industry-wide cybersecurity concerns surged this quarter. While Krishna did not specify the exact cause in his letter, the catalyst was Claude Mythos — Anthropic's frontier AI model that uncovered thousands of critical vulnerabilities in the world's most important software. Enterprises were distracted assessing their exposure rather than signing new deals.
5. Gross Margin Erosion
GAAP gross margin fell 100 basis points to 57.7%, and operating margin fell 70 basis points to 59.4%.
IBM's Response to the Cybersecurity Crisis
IBM committed $5 billion to launch Lightwell — a trusted enterprise clearinghouse to address open-source software vulnerabilities. Early adopters include nearly every major Wall Street bank (JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and others), suggesting the concerns were systemic and financial-services-focused. General availability was announced on July 8, 2026.
What Is Claude Mythos?
Claude Mythos is Anthropic's most powerful frontier AI model, specifically designed for cybersecurity, biology, and healthcare research. Its objective is to deploy state-of-the-art AI to find and fix vulnerabilities in the world's most critical software before attackers can exploit them. Access is currently limited to a small group of vetted partners.
Project Glasswing
Claude Mythos powers Project Glasswing — a cross-industry collaboration to secure open-source software at global scale.
Key milestones:
- April 7, 2026: Project Glasswing launched. Initial partners: AWS, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorgan Chase, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Palo Alto Networks.
- Within 6 weeks: Approximately 50 partners found 10,000+ high- or critical-severity vulnerabilities in the world's most systemically important software.
- By June 2, 2026: Expanded to approximately 150 organizations across 15+ countries.
Benchmark Performance
Claude Mythos Preview delivered significant results on industry benchmarks:
| Benchmark | Score |
|---|---|
| GPQA Diamond | 94.6% |
| Terminal-Bench 2.0 | 82.0% |
It can autonomously identify complex vulnerabilities that prior-generation models missed and proactively fix them at scale.
Dual-Use Risk
Anthropic acknowledges that Mythos could be misused if it falls into the wrong hands — including to create cyberattacks. As a result, access is tightly controlled through a trusted access program.
IBM's Countermove: Lightwell
IBM's response was Lightwell — a $5 billion commitment backed by 20,000+ engineers creating a trusted enterprise clearinghouse for open-source vulnerabilities. Early banking adopters include JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley.
